Wet Pipe Sprinkler System

Overview

Wet pipe sprinkler systems are the most common. Water is kept under pressure in the sprinkler piping at all times. When a sprinkler head opens, water releases immediately. Wet pipe systems are the simplest and the most cost-effective for most uses. They are highly reliable and easy to maintain. Like all sprinkler systems, they require inspection and testing every year.

The technology

Wet pipe sprinkler systems are open to the water supply and are full of water at all times. When opened, they spray water directly onto the fire.

The sprinkler heads are blocked off by a heat-sensitive plug. The heads open when fire melts away the plug. Water sprays from any sprinkler that reaches the melting point. Other sprinkler heads do not go off automatically. Each head must be tripped individually. Many systems use a fire pump to help maintain the water pressure in the sprinkler system at safe levels.

Some systems use an alarm check valve. The valve senses changes in water pressure and activates an alarm when a sprinkler head is activated. Some alarms are as simple as a water-powered gong. More sophisticated alarms may notify the fire department or trigger other systems electronically.

Wet pipe sprinklers use the least and the simplest technology. They are the easiest to design, assemble, and maintain. As the pipes are full of water at all times, they are much less likely to corrode than dry pipe systems. Further, wet pipe sprinkler systems require the least inspection and testing.

Applications

Wet pipe sprinkler systems are highly reliable, but they will freeze in cold weather. They can be used in only warmer climates. Wet pipe systems may be found in nearly all building types:

  • Shopping Centers
  • Apartment and condos
  • Single family home
  • Warehouses (when heated)
  • Factories
  • Hospitals
  • Stores

Dry pipe systems should be used where freezing temperatures are a concern.
